Publicado el 31-08-2010City Centre
São Paulo, like other cities in Brazil and around the world, is expanding on to the suburbs,
while the number of inhabitants in the central inner urban area is decreasing. This trend
called urban sprawl is not sustainable, as it leads to the occupation of green areas, to
increasing soil sealing, unnecessary displacements and mobility and social segregation.
However, similar to the trend of inner urban development in industrialized countries,
redevelopment of inner urban spaces, many of which had been abandoned due to changes
in the productive profile and in infrastructure of such cities, may already be noticed in São
Paulo and in other cities in Latin America.
The European Union, through the project URBAL III “INTEGRATION – Integrated
Urban Development”, under the coordination of the city of Stuttgart, Germany, is
supporting initiatives of internal sustainable development in the cities of São Paulo and
Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Bogotá (Colombia), Quito (Equator), Guadalajara and Chihuahua
(Mexico). These cities try to develop innovative and applicable solutions by implementing
projects that aim at the revitalization and reuse of brownfield areas in their central districts.
The objective of the seminar is to present and discuss experiences and initiatives of urban
renewal and ongoing internal development in the city of São Paulo in the light of the
German experience in this field of action. High representatives from the public
administration and the private sector from São Paulo and Stuttgart, Germany will present
lectures on this issue.
The expected audience for this Seminar is composed of actors and stakeholders from
public institutions involved with urban planning, housing and environment, as well as
private actors from the real estate and finance sectors, consultants and researchers in the
field of urban development, l and environmental management.
